NOTHING BOX - THINKING OUTSIDE
THE BOX
These are miscellaneous tracks created
between 2000 and 2001. No artwork is available for them, but I'll
provide some explanations here.
-
"intro 1" - 2000. This
was going to be the original intro track to happy accidents, but
the samples disqualified it at mp3.com. I don't feel it merits inclusion
on the release via this site. [mp3]
-
"exploited and decaying" - 2000.
This was a remix I did of Substructure's "Exploiting The Machine" for his
Exploiting The Machine remix CD, which is out of print. You
can hear the original version of the track here.
[mp3]
-
"belfast (urban blight mix)"
- 2000. I did this remix for Cage Decay for his Belfast remix
CD, also out of print. You can hear the original version here.
[mp3]
-
"belfast (pollution mix)" - 2000.
This was another, much noisier remix I did of "Belfast." It did not
make the CD. [mp3]
-
"american tradition (epileptic mix)"
- 2001. I did this remix for Anaphylaxis, which was eventually included
on his Critical
Approaches To American Music remix disc. Anaphylaxis' Jason
Coffman wanted remixes done of his tracks from his American
Music CD. Two complications arose. First, the original
version of "American Tradition" was part of the aborted soundtracks
for one-minute films compilation, so I had to work from the remix on
American Music. The second complication was that I only had
the mp3 to work with, no individual samples or sounds. I ended up
speeding up the whole track to different speeds and making samples of the
cheerleaders to create this rhythmic-noise track. Originally, I wanted
to make it 10-minutes-plus in length, but that probably would have caused
seizures. The final result was under two minutes, but still intense.
The original remix can be downloaded at the American Music link; mine is
to the right here. [mp3]
-
"sexy dj (i'm too sexy for this mix)"
- 2001. Jason Coffman pointed out that Nadine Renee, an urban dance
artist, set up a remix contest for her song "Sexy DJ." We thought
it would be amusing to create experimental/noise "remixes" of the song
in order to unnerve her. In the end, we had set up a tribute
website [long defunct] that encompassed dozens of experimental and noise
artists making "remixes" of "Sexy DJ." Surprisingly, Nadine was a
good enough of a sport to actually create a Best Experimental Remix category.
I didn't win, but I was amused that she made a separate category for her
contest based on the list of mixes we sent her. She only provided
the vocal track, which I heavily modified. You can hear a snippet of her
original track here.
(Sadly, it turns out she died from complications from childbirth in 2004.
My condolences to her family and fans.) [mp3]
-
"whiplash (beavis in the house mix)"
- 2001. This is the "whiplash" remix I had originally intended to
release for the remix contest I did for happy accidents. I
originally planned on calling the remix companion disc reconstructive
surgery, but in the end I dropped "the outer darkness" and its remix
and put the all the other original and remix tracks onto the happy accidents
mp3.com CD. As mp3.com had an issue with unlicensed samples, I dropped
those samples and released the remix as the "ambulance chasers mix."
The samples of Beavis are colorful; you have been warned. :) [mp3]
